Franz Joseph Haydn

Major compositions:  The Creation (oratorio), "Surprise" 
     Symphony No. 94 (orchestra), "The Clock" Symphony 
     No. 101 (orchestra), Piano Sonata in E-flat Major, Piano 
     Concerto in G Major, Piano Concerto in D Major

Interesting Facts:

 -Haydn was called “Papa” Haydn even though he never had 
  any children, he was considered the "father" of the symphony. 
-Haydn wrote 106 symphonies.

-At age 8 he became a member of the famous Vienna boys choir at 

 St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

-Haydn was the music director for Prince Paul Esterhazy in 
 Eisenstadt, Hungary (1761).

-He met Mozart in 1783, Mozart learned much about musical 
 structure from Haydn.

-Haydn met Beethoven in 1792 in Vienna and gave him 
 counterpoint lessons.

-He was one of the three leaders of the Viennese Classic school 
 (along with Mozart & Beethoven).

-Haydn was influenced by the keyboard sonatas of C.P.E Bach.
